Nutrition Education Specialist II - under the supervision of a Registered Dietitian, provides comprehensive nutrition assessments and medium risk nutrition counseling services to participants for the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children, provides participant centered services according to federal guidelines, rules and regulations.


Education and Experience:

  • Dietetic Technician, Registered (DTR) and or Bachelors of Science degree in nutrition (community nutrition public health nutrition, nutrition science).
  • Must hold current registration with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) AND any combination of training, education, and/or experience which demonstrates. the ability to perform the duties of the position.
  • Must have valid Arizona Driver’s License.
  • High School diploma or equivalency.
  • CPR and First Aid Certification, required.
  • Fingerprint Clearance Card through DPS, required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • WIC program requirements including the nutrition assessment process and acceptable anthropometric measurement practices.
  • Human nutrition, public health nutrition.
  • Principles of participant centered education.
  • Principles of critical thinking.
  • Available health and human services/resources within the community.
  • Behavioral change theories.
  • Grant writing process.
  • Work well with people of varied cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Listen actively, provide corrective feedback and implement mentoring relationships.
  • Compile and analyze data and prepare reports.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies and the public.
  • Work well under pressure and deal with problems which may be controversial or sensitive in nature.
  • Manage time and workload efficiently.
  • Oversee subordinates.
  • Keep up to date on nutrition through continuing education.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides participant centered nutrition education and medium risk nutrition. counseling for individuals and/or groups according to age, category, health risks and family needs.
  • Assigns appropriate food package for eligible participants based on age, category, health risks and family needs.
  • Develops and implements participant nutrition care plans.
  • Monitors follow-up recommendations as written into the care plan.
  • Documents all nutrition assessments and interventions into participant database.
  • Evaluates family needs for health care financial and social assistance in order to make and document appropriate referrals.
  • Assesses staff needs and coordinates staff development activities and trainings.
  • Promotes breastfeeding and breastfeeding support activities.
  • Plans and implements community outreach activities.
  • Attends meetings, trainings and conferences as required.
  • Develops and revises nutrition education materials.
  • Mentors, observes and evaluates assigned staff based on identified competencies.
  • Performs Nutrition Education Specialist I duties and other duties as required or assigned.
  • Additional Responsibilities:
  • Providing participant centered customer service.
  • Determining nutritional needs of individuals through nutrition assessment.
  • Collaborating with participants to modify nutrition and health behavior.
  • Developing rapport and encouraging open communication with participants and caretakers.
  • Organizing and synthesizing information to evaluate and prioritize the information appropriately.
  • Communicating clearly and concisely to individuals and/or groups, both orally and in writing.
  • Analyzing participant information in order to determine nutrition education needs and formulate care plan.
  • Facilitating nutrition counseling and classes.
  • Serving as a mentor to provide professional support to assigned staff.
