The Medical Assistant I promotes patients’ health by maintaining the day-to-day operation of the patient care area by assisting support staff and working with the clinic provider to ensure physical and psychological support for patients at the level for which the Medical Assistant was trained and certified. Provides support services in patient care within the scope of Medical Assistant and under the direction of the clinic physician or mid-level provider.


Education and Experience:

  • Medical Assistant Certification; required
  • 0-1 years’ experience
  • Grandfather Clause
  • Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification; required
  • Bilingual; preferred. May be required based on patient location.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Demonstrates experience skill levels for Medical Assistant I - competencies must be accounted for consistently.
  • Demonstrates competencies in caring for all age groups including newborns, infants, children, adolescents, adults and geriatric patients.
  • Ability to work with customers from a variety of venues.
  • Experience with electronic medical records.
  • Ability to follow a system and protocol to achieve a common goal.
  • Confidence to communicate and outreach to other health care organizations and personnel.
  • Knowledge of chronic disease management preferred.
  • Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supports assigned provider for patient care.
  • Identifies patient service requirements by establishing rapport with the patient and others while being aware of age-specific needs protocols.
  • Sets up exam rooms for patient care.
  • Rooms patients:
  • Place patient in room.
  • Takes routine patient vital signs, including height, weight and oxygen levels.
  • Records vital signs in the patient’s chart.
  • Prepares patient for examination.
  • Assists with performing EKGs, Spirometry, breathing treatments and injections.
  • Performs required tests as ordered by provider.
  • Assists provider in examination of patients and gives instructions to patients as directed by provider.
  • Administers injections to include immunizations as directed by provider.
  • Fills out appropriate immunization paperwork for recording purposes. Ensure proper update of patient chart and ASIIS
  • Answers telephone calls and takes messages for provider.
  • Returns patient phone calls as directed by provider.
  • Cleans and prepares exam rooms between patients.
  • Restocks exam room supplies as required.
  • Sends medication refill requests to provider for approval.
  • Coordinates appointments for specific care and diagnostic procedures.
  • As instructed by provider, notifies patient of test results.
  • Ensures quality of care by maintaining clinic standards of care while adhering to requirements of other governing agencies.
  • Protects patients and employees by complying with infection control policies and protocols, following medication administration, storage procedures and controlled substance regulations.
  • Performs sterilization of instruments and surgical packs in a timely manner.
  • Maintains documentation of patient care services by completing patient and department records in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Documents verbal and written procedures, medication, delivery of care and pertinent information regarding care rendered to the patient.
  • Ensures operation of medical equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements by following manufacturer’s instructions, reporting malfunctions, requesting repairs, maintaining equipment inventory and evaluating new equipment and techniques.
  • Maintains medical supplies inventory by anticipating needed supplies.
  • Performs specimen collections as directed by provider.
  • Performs waiver laboratory testing.
  • Responsible for tracking of laboratory and diagnostic tests.
  • Reports communicable diseases to agencies as required.
  • Adheres to expectations of required/mandatory in-services and certifications.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications and establishing personal networks.
  • Participates in in-service and education programs as requested.
  • Ensures pre-visit information is completed.
  • Supports primary medical assistant with patient care as required.
  • Completes all prior authorizations for medications.
  • Handles patient discharge after provider visit.
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned or requested.
